The United States carried out large-scale airstrikes against Islamic State militants across Syria on Saturday, the Pentagon said. The operation was launched in response to the killing of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter last month. US warplanes and drones dropped more than 90 bombs on around three dozen locations, according to US Central Command spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins.

The targets included ISIS infrastructure, smuggling routes and weapons storage sites. The Jordanian military also took part in the strikes. US officials said the action was aimed at weakening ISIS’s operational capabilities and preventing future attacks on American and allied forces in the region.

“The strikes today targeted ISIS throughout Syria as part of our ongoing commitment to root out Islamic terrorism against our warfighters, prevent future attacks, and protect American and partner forces in the region," Central Command said in a post on X.

Saturday’s airstrikes came weeks after the first military strikes on December 20 in Syria, aimed at eliminating Islamic State fighters and weapons sites following the killing of American citizens by ISIS near Palmyra.
