When fortune smiles, one can rise from obscurity to great heights in the blink of an eye. Their days transform rapidly. However, if luck sours, the fall from grace can be equally swift. This proved true for one individual who, despite suddenly acquiring a fortune of crores, saw it all vanish due to misfortune.

Despite being legally entitled to a fortune that should have brought immediate wealth, a person found he is penniless. Although recognised as the rightful owner of Rs 11 crore, he was unable to access even a single penny, leaving the court powerless to enforce the legal decision. This unfortunate situation exemplifies the adage that true fortune encompasses more than just legal entitlement.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a man in China, identified as Yao, purchased two lottery tickets for approximately Rs 238 in July 2019. Instead of collecting the physical tickets, Yao requested the shopkeeper to hold onto them and transferred the cost. The shopkeeper sent a photograph of two tickets to Yao.

However, a twist of fate occurred later that evening when one of the tickets won a staggering Rs 11.7 crore. Upon Yao’s arrival to claim his winnings, the shopkeeper insisted that he had mistakenly sent the wrong photograph and the winning ticket belonged to another customer. The shopkeeper then claimed the prize money and vanished.

To further complicate matters, it was revealed that the shopkeeper had entered into an agreement with another individual, identified as Wang, giving him Rs 17 lakh in exchange for the winning ticket. All chat records pertaining to the incident were subsequently deleted.

Two months after the agreement, Yao discovered that the individual who had taken the money was the shopkeeper’s brother and that he had kept Rs 7 crore. Consequently, Yao filed a case against the shopkeeper. The court ruled in favour of Yao, ordering the person who had taken the money to return the prize money. The shopkeeper’s brother challenged this decision in a higher court, but the ruling remained in Yao’s favour.

Despite the shopkeeper and his brother’s accounts being frozen, they contained no funds. An order was also issued to auction their house, but no buyer could be found. Instead of receiving financial gain, Yao incurred significant legal expenses, depleting his savings. To this day, he remains the legal owner of crores but possesses nothing.
