The Lahore High Court in Pakistan on Tuesday directed the police to stop “harassing" 48-year-old Sarabjeet Kaur, the Indian Sikh woman who embraced Islam and married a local man she had been acquainted with on social media for nearly a decade.

Kaur had travelled to Pakistan earlier this month as part of a group of around 2,000 Sikh pilgrims who entered through the Wagah border to participate in events marking Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary.

While the pilgrims returned to India on November 13, Kaur was reported missing.

According to a senior Lahore police official, Kaur married Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, about 50 km from Lahore, on November 4, a day after her arrival in Pakistan.

When the pilgrimage group proceeded to Nankana Sahib the same day, she did not join them and instead went to Sheikhupura with Hussain.

Kaur and Hussain later approached the Lahore High Court, alleging that police had carried out an unlawful raid at their residence in Farooqabad, Sheikhupura, and were pressuring them to end their marriage.

Justice Farooq Haider instructed the police not to intimidate the couple.

In their petition, Kaur stated that a police officer “caused undue harassment" and attempted to force them to dissolve their marriage.

She said her husband is a Pakistani national and that she has contacted the Indian mission to seek a visa extension and apply for Pakistani citizenship.

A video circulating on social media shows Kaur, who was given the Muslim name Noor ahead of the nikah, saying she had known Hussain for nine years through Facebook.

“I am a divorcee and wanted to marry Hussain. Therefore, I came here for the purpose," she said, adding that both of them were being “harassed by police and unknown people."

She insisted she “happily married Hussain."

Kaur hails from Amanipur village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district.

Earlier reports had indicated that Kaur’s former husband had been living abroad for several years. She is the mother of two sons.
