The Congress said BJP MP Anurag Thakur's references to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's caste were "highly abusive" and "unconstitutional"

A day after BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s speech on the Union budget, there was ruckus in Parliament over his remarks about Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Caste politics peaked in the Lok Sabha as Congress MPs shouted slogans of ‘We Want Caste Census’.

The Congress said Thakur’s references to Gandhi’s caste were “highly abusive” and “unconstitutional”. The party alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in fact, has encouraged a “serious breach of parliamentary privilege” by sharing the speech on his social media.

Earlier, in the parliamentary party meeting, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said the Narendra Modi-led government has persisted with “dividing communities” despite its significant decline in the Lok Sabha elections. “We hoped Modi govt would draw lessons from significant decline in LS polls but they are persisting with dividing communities,” she said.
