Pentagon shifts Iran conflict casualties into new Overseas Operations category

The Pentagon has created a new category in its official casualty tracking system after saying "Operation Epic Fury", the US military's name for combat operations against Tehran, has ended. As part of that change, the four soldiers killed and dozens of troops wounded in the latest round of US-Iran fighting have been removed from the official Iran war tally and placed under a new category called "Overseas Operations".

The Pentagon's online Defence Casualty Analysis System now shows a total of 642 wounded troops from the conflict when the figures under Operation Epic Fury and the new category are combined. The change has raised questions about how the impact on US service members is being counted after the US military carried out nearly two weeks of strikes against Iran in a bid to gain control of the Strait of Hormuz, followed by Iranian strikes on neighbouring countries in the Middle East that host US forces.

A Pentagon official said on Tuesday that because Operation Epic Fury had concluded, the military had decided to classify casualties linked to the latest strikes under the new category. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, did not give a date for the formal end of the operation.

After a few days of paused hostilities and efforts by mediators to return both sides to negotiations, US Central Command said on Tuesday that it had intercepted multiple ballistic missiles fired at American troops in the region. The US and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire in April and signed an interim deal to end the war in mid-June, before strikes resumed this month after Iran attacked ships in the crucial shipping route.

After the four soldiers killed this month were removed from the Iran war death toll in the online system, Pentagon spokespeople said on social media last week that this was not an attempt to hide the growing human cost of the conflict. They said it was due to "anomalies" and "temporary data disruptions" that were being resolved "imminently".

On Sunday, the four troops appeared by name in the new "Overseas Operations" category. Three soldiers were killed after a base in Jordan was hit on July 17 by Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, while one died in Iraq a day later during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at a White House briefing in May that the operation had "concluded", adding, "we achieved the objectives of that operation." But when Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth testified before Congress last week, he did not say the Iran war had ended and gave lawmakers cost estimates for the conflict running through September 30.

In sum, the Pentagon has shifted the latest deaths and injuries from the Iran war tally into a separate category after saying Operation Epic Fury is over, even as questions remain over how the casualties from the renewed fighting are being recorded.
