An Indian-origin taxi driver in Canada helped ensure the safe arrival of a baby after a pregnant passenger went into labour during a late-night ride to a hospital, according to local media reports.

Hardeep Singh Toor, a Calgary-based cab driver, received a dispatch call late last Saturday for what was described as an urgent hospital trip. The request soon turned into a race against time when he realised the couple he picked up were moments away from welcoming their child, Global News reported.

“It was a pregnant lady, and her companion was helping her get in (the cab). She was in pain," news outlet CTV quoted Toor as saying on Thursday. From the moment he saw the couple, Toor understood the seriousness of the situation.

“My thought was I should call an ambulance … but looking at the weather, I thought maybe it’s not the right call," he told CTV. “Her body language was telling me she did not have the time. … I decided to drive," he added.

The journey to the hospital turned into an intense 30-minute ordeal. Toor recalled the drive as nerve-wracking, with shouting and movement in the back seat as traffic signals tested their patience. Amid stormy conditions, icy roads and temperatures plunging to around –23°C, he said his sole focus was reaching the hospital safely and quickly, Global News reported.

Just a few blocks from the Peter Lougheed Centre, Toor noticed the sudden silence in the back seat. The baby had been born moments before reaching the hospital.

“I did not stop. … I was thinking I should get there as soon as possible to get them (to medical attention)," Toor said. Upon arrival, hospital staff rushed out to assist the mother and newborn.

“When I got there and saw the staff running to the car, I stepped out—I let them do whatever they needed," he added, noting that he was later informed that both the mother and baby were doing well.

Reflecting on the experience, Toor, who has been driving a cab for four years, said, “It’s my first experience getting two people in and three people out," calling it a “proud moment."
