Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a five-day tour to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia on Sunday. At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, Prime Minister Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus tomorrow. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. While in Nicosia, the Prime Minister will hold talks with President Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India’s engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union.
Ambassador of Cyprus to India, Evagoras Vryonides, told CNN-News18 that PM Modi’s visit is highly anticipated. “We are very, very happy that this meeting (with President Christodoulides) is taking place," he stated.
The ambassador highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and India, which have been robust since the time of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In recent years, India has emerged as a powerful regional entity, and Cyprus is pleased with the timing of the Prime Minister’s visit, the ambassador told CNN-News18. Owing to its strategic position, Cyprus serves as a crucial entry point to the European Union, especially in the context of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) project, he added.
Ambassador Vryonides expressed gratitude for India’s continued support and mentioned that further defence cooperation is on the horizon.
The visit holds significance as Cyprus has been a consistent supporter of India’s positions on Kashmir, cross-border terrorism, and reforms in the United Nations Security Council.
From Cyprus, the Prime Minister will travel to Canada to attend the G7 Summit. At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views on key global issues and hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
The final leg of the Prime Minister’s visit will be to Croatia, marking the first high-level visit by an Indian PM to the country. Croatia is being seen as a potential partner in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, and the visit represents a major milestone in India-Croatia relations.
