Pope Francis' Death: The pontiff, serving as the Bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic Church, became pope in 2013 following the resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis’ Death: Pope Francis died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta at the age of 88, said the Vatican in a video statement on Monday.

In the last few months, the pontiff dealt with multiple hospital visits amid growing concerns about his health. He was hospitalised on February 14 for treatment of Bronchitis and later, the Vatican confirmed a diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia and revealed he had undergone blood transfusions due to low platelet levels, a condition linked to anaemia.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church," said Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo.

The pontiff, serving as the Bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic Church, became pope in 2013 following the resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised," Farrell said.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune."

‘Europe Mourns Passing Of Pope’

Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, expressed deep sorrow on the passing of Pope Francis and said that his “contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe."

“Europe mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. ‘The People’s Pope’ will be remembered for his love for life, hope for peace, compassion for equality & social justice. May he rest in peace."
