Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are once again facing scrutiny over the stability of their staff following the abrupt departure of their Director of Communications, Emily Robinson, after just four months in the role. Robinson, a former senior director of publicity at Netflix who notably worked on the hit series The Crown, joined the couple’s team in June to oversee their media strategy and bolster their various ventures, including their production company.
Her short tenure highlights a persistent challenge for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their move to California in 2020. Robinson is reportedly the tenth publicist to have left a communications role with the couple in the last five years, adding to a perceived “revolving door" of staff. This frequent turnover has consistently fuelled media reports questioning the work environment and management style within their organisation, Archewell.
Sources close to Robinson, who is noted for her professional reputation and is described as “not a quitter", indicated that her departure was of her own accord, adding that “things must have been pretty horrible for her to go". This contrasts with the official statement from a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess, who confirmed the exit but framed it as a successful completion of a temporary assignment. The spokesperson stated that Robinson “oversaw project-based work for a very successful season of With Love, Meghan and additional support for the production company", emphasising that she “did an excellent job and completed these projects with great success".
The timing of the departure follows a period of heightened media scrutiny for the couple, including criticism surrounding a recent public appearance. While their current Chief Communications Officer, Meredith Maines, remains in place, the exit of an executive with Robinson’s high-level Netflix experience raises fresh questions about the challenges of managing the public relations of one of the world’s most scrutinised couples. The ongoing difficulty in maintaining a long-term communications team continues to be a central narrative surrounding the Sussexes’ post-royal careers.
