A political tussle has erupted over the state government’s report card highlighting achievements in one year. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Ex-CM Naveen Patnaik are at odds. The BJP claims the state government has fulfilled the promises made in the Sankalp Patra (election manifesto) immediately after taking office a year ago. The BJD counters, stating that mere rhetoric cannot lead to development.
Chief Minister Mohan Charanj Majhi presented a detailed report card highlighting achievements over the period and outlined the development roadmap for the future on Tuesday.
Addressing the media, CM Majhi stated that the government has taken steps to fulfill the promises made in the Sankalp Patra. He noted that more than 11 of the 21 promises have already been fulfilled in the first 12 months in office.
“We have not simply governed; we have fulfilled the hopes of the people. Whatever we promised, we have delivered," said CM Majhi.
CM Majhi emphasized, “My simplicity is not a weakness. There are many things behind my comments. Many secrets will be revealed in the future. Anyone involved in corruption will face stringent action. Recently, actions have been taken against IAS officers, mine owners, and contractors. Many senior officials, including the Chief Engineer, have faced consequences, with over 200 senior officials under scrutiny. Many big fish are in jail."
The government is taking steps to investigate mining, chit fund scams, and various corruption cases. Officers have been tasked with collecting more information, and further investigations are ongoing. The process of reorganizing the Lokayukta has begun, with steps to be taken soon, said Chief Minister Majhi.
Expressing gratitude towards PM Narendra Modi for his support for Odisha, the CM noted that the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Odisha again on June 20, further enhancing Centre-State coordination.
Listing some major initiatives, Majhi mentioned that on June 12 last year, the state cabinet took four landmark decisions aimed at people-centric governance. These included opening all four gates of Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri for devotees, launching the Subhadra Yojana for women’s empowerment, establishing a Rs 500 crore corpus fund for the temple’s development, and providing an Rs 800 bonus per quintal for paddy to farmers. Around 17 lakh ‘Lakhpati Didis’ have been empowered through targeted women-centric schemes, fulfilling the government’s vision of self-reliant rural households.
Highlighting education as a major focus, Majhi mentioned the launch of Godavarish Mishra Adarsh Vidyalya in each panchayat and the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP), promising revolutionary changes in teaching and learning.
Regarding the future agenda, he mentioned that the state government has initiated structured action plans under Mission 2036 and Mission
These strategic missions aim to make Odisha a model state in the coming decades. Under Mission 2036, the Odisha government will soon unveil 36 distinct development programmes.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik criticized the BJP government in Odisha, accusing it of focusing on long speeches and advertisements rather than real development.
During the launch of the “Jana Jagaran Abhiyan" at Sankha Bhawan, Naveen questioned the BJP government’s achievements in Odisha. “They call it a people’s government. But where are the people? Long speeches and big advertisements alone cannot bring development," he remarked.
Naveen claimed that during BJD’s tenure, 90% of Odisha’s population benefited from the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana. “The current Ayushman Bharat scheme fails to provide medicines or free hospital treatment. Thousands, including mothers, the elderly, cancer patients, and children, face harassment," he said.
Naveen alleged that the health system has collapsed, with Chief District Medical Officer posts lying vacant in 19 out of 30 districts. “This is the so-called success of the current government," he said.
He further claimed that Mission Shakti brought glory to the state across India, but the present government has weakened this movement within one year, causing harassment to Mission Shakti mothers in banks.
Naveen noted that in 2000, the BJD inherited a state with a loan burden of Rs 18,000 crore, and the government was running on overdrafts. “By 2024, BJD left a treasury surplus of Rs 45,000 crore. The current government is now running on record loans," he said.
Farmers are being exploited by millers, and irrigation projects, which reached record levels under BJD, have been halted by the current government, said Naveen.
