Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday said Ramanagara will be renamed as Bengaluru South District.
Shivakumar said the notification to rename the city will soon be issued. This comes after the Centre blocked the renaming proposal, triggering a war of words with the Karnataka government.
Calling it political interference, the state government said it will consider pursuing the legal route. Minister Priyank Kharge said the name change had been proposed to boost economic activity.
“BJP people, they have to use some common sense. How is it looting by changing names? What is the meaning of looting? In Uttar Pradesh and other places they have changed names in a lot of places, what about that! They have to use some common sense," Ramanagara district incharge and transport minister Ramalinga Reddy was quoted as saying by India Today.
The move to rename Ramanagara district as “Bengaluru South" gained momentum early in July 2024, when a delegation led by Shivakumar met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and submitted a formal memorandum. The government argued that rebranding the district will accelerate development and provide better recognition for the region. The proposal was approved by the state cabinet on July 26, 2024.
The Ramanagara district, located about 50 km from Bengaluru, consists of Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Harohalli taluks. Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil had then said the decision to rename the district was taken based on the “demand of people".
Ramanagara is Shivakumar’s home district, and he had first tabled the proposal in October 2023. But the renaming decision did not go down well with former Karnataka CM and Union minister HD Kumaraswamy, who alleged that the proposal was aimed at exploiting real estate opportunities in Ramanagara.
