Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Friday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he became the second-longest-serving premier of India in consecutive terms.

While addressing the gathering at the banquet hosted in the honour of PM Modi in Male, Muizzu said that this remarkable milestone is a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service.

“I convey my heartiest congratulations to Your Excellency on becoming the second longest serving Prime Minister of India today. This remarkable milestone, 4,078 consecutive days in office, is a testament to your unwavering commitment to public service and dedication to the progress and prosperity of the Indian people," the Maldivian President said.

PM Modi is on a two-day visit to the archipelago nation. His visit, which comes immediately after his landmark visit to the UK, holds strategic significance as Muizzu had come to power in 2023 on an ‘India Out’ poll campaign.

He arrived at Velana Airport in Male on Friday. In a special gesture, Muizzu welcomed PM Modi at the airport as he arrived from the United Kingdom. Maldives Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister and Minister of Homeland Security were also present at the airport to welcome PM Modi.

He is visiting the archipelago nation at the invitation of President Muizzu to participate as the Guest of Honour at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. India was among the first nations to recognise Maldivian independence in 1965 and establish diplomatic relations.

Narendra Modi Becomes 2nd Longest Serving PM

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Friday to become the second-longest-serving PM of India in consecutive terms.

PM Modi completed 4,078 days in office on Friday. Former PM Indira Gandhi was in the office in an unbroken stint for 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.

The record for the unbroken stint is held by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Narendra Modi has matched Nehru in leading their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.

As an elected head of a government, in state and at the Centre, Narendra Modi already enjoys the longest stint.

He became Gujarat chief minister in 2001 and remained in the office before taking over as prime minister in 2014.

Modi, the first prime minister born after Independence, is also the longest-serving PM who is not from Congress.
