Global TV Bangladesh Threatened Over Demand to Sack Journalist Naznin Munni

Bangladesh’s media community is facing fresh concern after threats were made against Global TV Bangladesh, a private television channel based in Dhaka. The incident comes just days after the offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were attacked and set on fire. A video shared online has added to fears that pressure on independent media is growing.

‘Remove Naznin Munni’

On 21 December, a group of youths went to Global TV’s office in Tejgaon and demanded the removal of the channel’s Head of News, Naznin Munni. The group identified itself as members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. They reportedly warned that if Munni was not dismissed, the channel’s office would be set on fire, similar to the recent attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

Naznin Munni later confirmed the threat in a Facebook post, saying seven to eight people came to her office and issued the warning. She said the threat was part of a wider pattern of intimidation against journalists.

What happened that evening

According to Munni, the incident took place on the evening of 21 December while she was not at the office. After finishing a meeting with reporters, she left around 8 pm to meet a friend. Shortly after, a group of youths arrived at the office and met the channel’s Managing Director, Ahmed Hossain.

The visitors first complained about Global TV’s coverage of the death of Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha. They then demanded Munni’s removal, accusing her of being an Awami League supporter. Munni has strongly denied having any political links.

Pressure on channel management

Munni said the youths asked the Managing Director to sign a written commitment stating that she would be dismissed within 48 hours. When he refused, the group allegedly became angry and repeated their threat of arson. One staff member present reportedly signed the paper, though the Managing Director did not.

Following the incident, Munni said the channel’s management advised her to stay away from the office for a few days and remain quiet. However, she chose to speak out publicly, saying silence was no longer an option.

Student group responds

The Prothom Alo report says the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s central president, Rifat Rashid, admitted that a member of the city committee visited Global TV without approval. He said the central body does not support any attack on the media and claimed the written memorandum did not mention arson.

Rashid said a show-cause notice has been issued to the member involved and promised action if a formal complaint is filed. He stressed that the movement does not endorse threats or violence against journalists.

Fear among journalists in Bangladesh

Naznin Munni said she believes the threat is part of a sustained campaign to intimidate the media. She pointed out that other journalists, including Jamuna TV editor Roksana Anjuman Nicole, have also been threatened in recent months.

She said such actions aim to silence voices in the media who can influence public opinion. “They want to remove people who can speak freely," she said.

No official comment yet

However, Global TV’s Managing Director Ahmed Hossain did not respond. Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow as journalists and media houses warn that repeated threats and attacks could seriously damage press freedom in Bangladesh.
