Russia launched a wave of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv early Thursday, damaging a building that houses the European Union’s diplomatic mission.

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova confirmed that the facility was “severely damaged by the shock wave" from the “massive" overnight missile and drone strikes.

She claimed that at least 10 people were killed and 30 others wounded in the assault, adding that this was Moscow’s answer to “peace" efforts.

Condemning the strikes, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Moscow of deliberately targeting diplomats, calling it a “direct breach of the Vienna convention."

‘Mocking Of Peace Efforts’

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned Russia’s overnight assault on Kyiv, calling it “a deliberate choice to escalate and mock the peace efforts."

The strikes came at a time when US President Donald Trump is stepping up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, pushing for a negotiated settlement to end the war.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has made Western-backed security guarantees a non-negotiable condition in any peace deal to guard against future Russian aggression.

Following an August 18 meeting at the White House between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several of his European allies, Trump’s administration signalled support for a European-led security framework.

This could include intelligence sharing, battlefield monitoring, and participation in an air defence shield for Ukraine.

Trump has publicly stated that he intends to convene a trilateral summit with Putin and Zelenskyy, claiming Moscow has agreed.

However, analysts remain sceptical, noting Putin’s reluctance to meet Zelenskyy directly and his stalling tactics in peace talks.

Instead, Russia has hardened its demands, insisting on Kyiv surrendering the entire Donbas region, including areas still outside Moscow’s control—an offer Zelenskyy has categorically rejected, warning it would hand Putin a launchpad for future invasions.

Reacting to Thursday’s attack, European Council President António Costa said the strike on the EU mission in Kyiv was “deliberate," adding he was “horrified" by Moscow’s actions.

“The EU will not be intimidated. Russia’s aggression only strengthens our resolve to stand with Ukraine and its people," Costa declared.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also condemned “another indiscriminate Russian attack during this senseless aggression," stressing in a post on X that the EU’s delegation represents “the EU’s voice on the ground in Ukraine."

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos echoed the outrage, saying: “I strongly condemn these brutal attacks, a clear sign that Russia rejects peace & chooses terror."
