Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rahman Barq, who recently hogged headlines over accusations of instigating people and causing the November 24 violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, has now been booked for alleged electricity theft.

According to reports, when the state electricity department officials arrived at Barq’s residence to check the meter readings, they found some issues.

The power officials checked the load of various electrical appliances, including air conditioner (AC) and fans, and found that the MP has a domestic power connection of 2 KW. However, he bypassed the meter for using appliances like AC, fridge, etc.

According to a report in Times of India, the power department found a load of 16,480 watts in the MP’s house. The findings were revealed after SDO Santosh Tripathi filed an FIR at Nakhasa Anti-Power Theft police station under section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act (Amendment) 2003.

A report in NDTV stated that the electricity department found that the available electricity connection was one-eighth of the load, following which the electricity board cut the power connection.

On Tuesday, the officials replaced the old meter with a smart meter after suspecting the possibility of tampering, the TOI report stated.

The publication further mentioned that the UP Power Corporation’s team was accompanied by local police, Rapid Action Force, and PAC jawans.
