A gunman fired at the US Consulate in Toronto early on Monday, damaging the facade. The second attack this year has intensified fears of linked targeted shootings across the city.

A shooter opened fire at the US Consulate in Toronto early on Monday, marking the second shooting at the building this year, police said. No one was injured, but officers found a single shell casing and damage to the building's facade.
Police said the shooting was followed by a high-speed chase that lasted about an hour, but no arrest has been made so far. Authorities said they are investigating the latest attack with urgency and are also examining whether it is linked to other recent shootings in the city.
Toronto Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said the search for the attacker or attackers would continue. "We will approach this investigation with great seriousness," Barredo said at a news conference. "We will bring the people responsible for this to justice." Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the shooting a "brazen attack" and said, "I want to say to the person or persons responsible, we will get you."
The consulate had also been targeted on March 10, when two suspects allegedly fired multiple shots at the building before driving away in a stolen vehicle. Last month, police arrested Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, 18, and Zara Jabbi, 19, and charged them with multiple offences linked to the March shooting. The charges have not been tested in court.
Barredo said there had been a police presence at the consulate since the first shooting. He said a police cruiser was stationed outside the building with its lights on when the latest gunfire took place, and two security personnel were inside at the time.
Police are also trying to establish the motive behind both incidents. Toronto police said in June that they believed multiple shootings, including the March attack, could be linked to "multilayered" gun-for-hire networks that have also targeted synagogues in the city. Over the weekend, two popular Jewish-owned bakeries were hit by gunfire. Barredo said police have not ruled out a connection between the incidents. "Investigators will follow the evidence to where it leads," he said.
The latest shooting at the US Consulate caused damage but no injuries, and police said efforts were on to identify those responsible while examining possible links with earlier attacks in Toronto.
