Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: The stock market closed higher for the fifth consecutive session on Tuesday (August 20), marking its longest winning streak in two months.
The Nifty ended above the 25,000 mark for the first time since July 24, finishing 70 points higher at 25,051, while the Sensex gained 213 points to settle at 81,858.
The broader markets also participated in the upmove with the Midcap index advancing 266 points to 57,931. However, the Nifty Bank index slipped 167 points to 55,699.
Buying was seen in IT and FMCG counters, with Infosys, TCS, HUL and Nestle among the top gainers on the Nifty. Eternal continued its rally on the back of a positive brokerage note, closing at a record high.
Hotel stocks also advanced on expectations of strong demand, with Indian Hotels ending 4% higher. Small-cap names such as Sky Gold and Carborundum Universal surged 14–15%.
On the other hand, defence and NBFC stocks came under pressure. BEL and Bajaj Finance were among the top Nifty losers, while Aurobindo Pharma shed 4% on reports of being a frontrunner for Zentiva’s acquisition. Gold financiers such as Muthoot Finance fell around 2% as gold prices slipped.
