Nifty 50 ends at five-month low, Sensex falls over 800 points

Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Markets opened on a positive note but were unable to maintain momentum as earnings disappointments, demand concerns, and weak performances across sectors led to sharp declines. A whopping 44 out of 50 Nifty stocks ended in the red, with Britannia, BEL, and NTPC among the top losers.

Investor sentiment took a hit as stocks like Britannia and Samvardhana Motherson reacted negatively to weak quarterly earnings. Britannia's stock declined by 7% due to anticipated pressure on volumes in the near term, while Motherson fell 5% after missing Q2 expectations. Bosch also closed 5% lower ahead of its quarterly results. FMCG stocks were under pressure, with the Nifty FMCG index down by 2%. All sectoral indices faced cuts, with PSU and auto stocks leading the losses.

MCX, HAL, GAIL, and Navin Fluorine were among the top midcap decliners. In contrast, Jubilant Food and Ramco Cements provided a rare bright spot, each surging by 5-6% after beating Q2 earnings expectations. UPL also gained 2%, bolstered by a positive outlook for H2FY25. Hyundai ended flat following muted Q2 earnings.
