Stock Market Highlights: Indian equities ended lower in a volatile session, with broader markets bearing the brunt of selling pressure. The Nifty slipped below the 25,200 mark to close at 25,158, down 75 points, while the Sensex fell 271 points to 81,910.
The Midcap index dropped 662 points to 57,424, and Nifty Bank declined 604 points to 58,800, underscoring weakness beyond frontline stocks. Volatility spiked sharply, with India VIX jumping over 8%, as intraday swings in the midcap space stretched close to 1,500 points.
Market breadth remained decisively negative, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 2:5 and nearly 30 Nifty stocks ending in the red. Heavyweights such as Tata Consumer, Trent, ICICI Bank, BEL and L&T declined 1–2%.
The rupee hit a record low of 91.72 per dollar, extending its decline to nearly 1.5% over the last five sessions.
