The Israeli defence forces have said that they killed “several terrorists" involved in the October 7 attack in the country.

Muraad Nasser Moussa Abu Jarrad, deputy commander of the Beit Hanoun Battalion of Palestinian Islamic Jihad – a militant Islamist group that operates mainly in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank – and Mahmoud Shukri Tiym Dardsawi, deputy head of the Islamic Jihad’s anti-tank array were among those killed in the Israeli strikes.

“Several terrorists involved in October 7th attacks were eliminated, in a joint IDF & ISA operation. Among them: Muraad Nasser Moussa Abu Jarrad, deputy commander of the Beit Hanoun Battalion of the Islamic Jihad terror organization. Mahmoud Shukri Tiym Dardsawi, IJ deputy head of the anti-tank array in Gaza City. The IDF will continue to operate in Gaza to ensure the protection of the civilians of Israel," the IDF tweeted.

On Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his government’s controversial plan to take control of the Gaza Strip, after Israel’s Security Cabinet approved setting up a “civil administration" there.

In a post on X, Netanyahu said the goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to remove Hamas and create a peaceful alternative government.

“We are not going to occupy Gaza — we are going to free Gaza from Hamas," he said, as international criticism of Israel’s military plans continues to grow.

The Israeli Security Cabinet has approved Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plan to set up a “civil administration" in the Gaza Strip that would be run by neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the Security Cabinet had endorsed Netanyahu’s proposal for defeating Hamas. The plan is based on five main principles: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising Gaza, maintaining Israeli security control over the territory, and creating an alternative civil administration independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
