In his first public reaction following the death row verdict delivered against his mother, ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed condemned the ruling stressing that the order was passed by an “illegal government".
Sajeeb Wazed vowed that the Awami League would fight the sentence to “save Bangladesh". Calling the legal proceedings a political manoeuvre, he declared the verdict as being borne of a “sham trial".
Wazed said the verdict was “predetermined" and argued that several irregularities highlight the fraudulent nature of the process. He said the government “changed the law to deliver this verdict".
He is, however, confident that his mother is “safe in India", and assured supporters that the Awami League is the largest party. In a message to Bangladesh, he pledged to fight for the party and the country.
Excerpts from the interview:
What is your reaction to the verdict?
This was a sham trial. It was completed in just two to three months. They changed the law to deliver this verdict. My mother was not even allowed to hire her own attorney. This is absolutely a sham, nothing else. The verdict was predetermined.
What will the Awami League do now?
This sentence is a joke. My mother is safe in India. What will they do to her? There is no rule of law. People responded to our shutdown. We are the largest party. This regime will fall and we will return. We will fight this out. There is no rule of law in Bangladesh.
Your grandfather and your mother both fought for Bangladesh, and now she has been sentenced to death. How do you see this moment?
Unfortunately, this is the work of Jamaat and Islamist radicals. This is their revenge. The people of Bangladesh must now decide whether they want to move forward or become a radical Islamic state. Islamists have backed this regime. Bangladesh must choose whether it moves ahead or remains a failed Islamic state. We have the largest number of supporters.
Have you spoken to your mother after the verdict?
I could not speak to my mother. We are outraged, and we will fight back.
The authorities say the phone conversation used as evidence is genuine. What is your response?
That phone conversation is being misrepresented. She only asked that miscreants be arrested. They took a part of it out of context and convicted her on that basis.
How did the inspector general become an approver in the case?
The IG who turned approver was under pressure. He was under arrest. You have to ask his family what happened.
What is your message to the people of Bangladesh?
My message to our people is to thank them. If they do not want Bangladesh to become a terrorist state, they must stand with us. We are fighting for our country, and we will never give up. I will fight for our party and for my country.
