A passenger was pushed into the path of an oncoming passenger train at a station of the New York subway system on Tuesday by a 23-year-old miscreant who has been caught by the police.

The video of the incident has also surfaced online. The victim is alive and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition with a head injury. A law enforcement official told the New York Post that the victim “fell perfectly in the trench" referring to the area between the train and the platform where the person fell.

The video that has surfaced online shows a 23-year-old man pushing a 45-year-old passenger onto the tracks. It also shows two other individuals who saw the incident jump the turnstile and leave.

A witness inside the train said people heard the driver over the intercom saying there was a man under the train. “The conductor said over the intercom that we were going to have to evacuate because there was a man under the train.

“We walked off the subway, there were a bunch of cops and paramedics and they climbed down to get him. When they got him out I was shocked to see him blinking his eyes and moving his fingers. He was bloody," Violet Paley, the witness, told the news agency.

The suspect was arrested near Columbus Circle hours later. He has a history of police encounters, including a 2019 assault charge for injuring an officer and an ongoing case from October for assault, harassment, and weapons possession. Charges in Tuesday’s incident are yet to be filed.

The incident is part of a growing number of transit crimes, including two knife attacks on Sunday and a deadly fire on December 22. According to the NYPD, felony assaults in the transit system have gone up by 40% compared to last year. The Guardian Angels have resumed subway patrols, but Mayor Eric Adams has criticized this, pointing to the increased deployment of police officers. Guard personnel are also stationed in the transit system for added security.
