A brief panic unfolded at Harvard University on Friday morning after reports of a shooting near Sherman Street, close to the Radcliffe Quad, prompted police to issue a shelter-in-place alert for students and staff.
The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) issued the alert shortly after 11 AM (US local time), warning everyone to stay indoors. Around 11:48 AM (US local time) the Cambridge Police Department said there was “no ongoing public safety risk at this time," and the university lifted the alert a few minutes later, as per a report by Harvard Crimson.
A second alert was sent nearly ten minutes later through the university’s MessageMe text and email system, said Cambridge Police.
A search for the suspect is still underway.
