A regular press briefing at the Russian Embassy in India saw a pleasant surprise when Roman Babushki, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Russian Embassy in India, welcomed attendees in Hindi.

As the presser began, Babushkin said, “Shuruat karengey. Shree Ganesh karte hai. Aap sab ka Ganesh Chaturthi hai. (We will begin…with Lord Ganesha. Ganesh Chaturthi is arriving.)"

“We would like to welcome everyone, aapka hardik swagat (A hearty welcome to you)," he later said, informing that he had received a lot of questions about the India-Russia ties in wake of changing global dynamics.

Addressing questions from reporters, Babushkin said Russia will continue to keep oil flowing to India despite tariffs imposed by the US. He also said the US pressure on India for its procurement of Russian crude oil is “unjustified".

His remarks came against the backdrop of strain in India’s ties with the US following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent that included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian crude oil.

“Russia is the largest producer of oil and India is the largest consumer. Any kind of unilateral action leads to disruptions in supply chains, imbalance in pricing policies and destabilisation of global markets, endangering the energy security of developing countries," Babushkin said.

“It is a challenging situation for New Delhi, but we have trust in our ties. We are confident that India-Russia energy cooperation will continue notwithstanding the external pressure," the envoy further informed.

India has condemned the US tariffs, calling them “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable". Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India would not compromise on the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen.
