The Indian High Commission in Singapore hosted around 200 Indian women working in the city-state under the government's 'One Stop Centre' initiative for women abroad. The event included health screenings and consultations on financial transactions, with the mission inviting women to seek help directly if they face any issues while working in Singapore.
High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule told the gathering on Sunday, “If you have any issues anytime, please don't hesitate to approach us,” and urged the women to approach High Commission officials directly for consultation and assistance. He also stressed the need to handle financial transactions through banking channels and to remain cautious amid rising financial scams.
The High Commission told PTI on Wednesday that the health screening was meant to encourage the women, many of whom work as domestic helpers and caregivers, to undergo regular check-ups while living and working in Singapore's fast-paced environment. Ambule also highlighted the role of non-governmental organisations run by members of the Indian community in supporting the One Stop Centre, which aims to reach out to Indian women working in Singapore.
One such organisation is Maharashtra Mandal Singapore, founded in 1994 to promote art, culture, traditions and the Marathi language among the Maharashtrian community in the city-state. The group works with the Indian High Commission on cultural, sports and community initiatives, including One District One Product programmes, the promotion of Indian culture and values, showcases of Indian talent and skills, and Indian film festivals.
Members of the Maharashtra Mandal Singapore youth wing also presented cultural performances for the women at the High Commission on Sunday, as the event brought together outreach, health support and guidance on financial safety for Indian women working in Singapore.
