US President Donald Trump signalled optimism on Monday and said that “something good may be happening" as Ukraine discusses his proposed 28-point peace plan that could end the war with Russia with top members of his administration.
“Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine??? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!" Trump posted on Truth Social, a platform he owns.
Officials from both countries announced on Sunday that they have drawn up an “updated and refined peace framework" and will continue to work on the peace plan in the coming days.
The joint statement highlighted that the talks were highly productive.
The US blindsided Kyiv and European countries with a 28-point peace plan last week, giving Ukraine until Thursday to agree to a framework to end Europe’s deadliest war since World War Two.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could travel to the United States as soon as this week to discuss the most sensitive aspects of the plan with Trump, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The initial 28-point proposal put forth by the US last week called on Ukraine to cede more territory, accept limits on its military and abandon its ambitions to join NATO, Russian demands that Ukrainians have long rejected.
A new version of a draft worked on in Geneva has not been published but all sides agreed that any deal must “uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty."
Zelenskyy said Monday his country was at a “critical moment", after last week insisting Ukraine risked losing either its “dignity" or Washington as an ally.
“To achieve real peace, more, more is needed. Of course we all continue working with partners, especially the United States, and look for compromises that strengthen but not weaken us," he added.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has said the original US plan could be a basis for a deal.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “tremendous" progress had been made at the talks.
“I honestly believe we’ll get there," Rubio said, adding: “Obviously, the Russians get a vote."
Moscow is in control of large areas of southern and eastern Ukraine, including Crimea which it took control of in 2014.
The Kremlin is seeking recognition of the territories it occupies and wants Kyiv to pull out of the part of the Donetsk region that remains under its control — demands deemed unacceptable by Ukraine.
