The black boxes which contained the voice recording of the cockpit and the flight data of the crashed Jeju Air flight do not have the plane’s last four minutes before the crash.

South Korea’s transport ministry on Saturday said that the recording had stopped in the black boxes four minutes before the disastrous crash in which 179 people were killed.

On December 29, Boeing 737-800 was flying from Thailand to Muan, South Korea with 181 passengers and crew.

The air traffic control was informed by the pilot that the jet had suffered a bird strike which resulted in a faulty gear and an emergency was declared four minutes before it belly-landing at the Muan airport and turned into a fireball after crashing into the concrete barrier.

“The analysis revealed that both the CVR and FDR data were not recorded during the four minutes leading up to the aircraft’s collision with the localiser," said the transport ministry in a statement while speaking about the two recording devices.

The localiser is a barrier which remains present at the runway’s end and helps in the landing of the aircraft. However, in this incident, it became the reason behind the severity of the crash.

Officials To Investigate Cause Of Data Loss In Black Box

“Plans are in place to investigate the cause of the data loss during the ongoing accident investigation," the statement said.

Initially, the officials analysed the voice recorder in South Korea and when they found that the data was missing, it was sent to a US Transportation Safety Board laboratory, said the ministry.

The recording data in the FDR and CVR had stopped at 8:59 am which has now made it difficult for the investigators to understand the situation.

The authorities have clarified that FDR and CVR data are important for investigations, they are not the only sources of evidence.

“The investigation involves analyzing various sources of information, including air traffic control records, video footage of the crash and debris from the site," the authorities said.

South Korean and US investigators are still trying to understand what led to the fatal crash of Jeju Air flight 2216, which was said to be the country’s worst plane crash in years.
