Spanish Police in the capital city of Madrid tasered and shot a suspected jihadist who reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar" at them after stabbing three people in a street attack.
The suspect, a Spaniard of Moroccan origin, also attempted to attack police and recited verses from the Quran as they tried to restrain him.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in the Puente de Vallecas district. Police said their Tasers failed to stop the teen, forcing officers to open fire. He was taken to the Gregorio Maranon Hospital, where he remained under guard on Sunday morning.
The violence began around 2 pm on Martin Alvarez Street after police received reports that a man “with Arab features" had stabbed three people, according to the UK-based newspaper Express. The victims were identified as an elderly woman, a man and a 40-year-old male who suffered a two-inch stab wound to his chest. All three were treated for injuries that were not described as life-threatening.
A few hours later, the suspect’s brother contacted authorities to report that the teen had locked himself inside a flat with a large knife and was acting aggressively. Police then categorised the situation as a possible Islamist terrorist incident and deployed a specialist unit trained for demonstrations and anti-terror operations.
Officers entered the flat around 4.30 pm and tasered the suspect twice, but he allegedly charged at them with the knife. Police then fired four shots, hitting him in the lung and kidney.
Spanish police union JUPOL later backed the officers, saying they had acted proportionately to “neutralise a radicalised young man who had attacked three other people". The investigation continued on Sunday, with Spanish media reporting that while the case was being probed as an Islamist terror incident, the suspect was also believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time.
