Prince Harry has sought advice from maternal uncle to change name
The UK’s Prince Harry has reportedly sought advice from Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, regarding changing his family name to Spencer, according to The Daily Mail.
Prince Harry is exploring the possibility of adopting his mother’s maiden name, which would mean relinquishing his official royal surname, Mountbatten-Windsor, currently used by his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Some international media reports also suggest that Prince Harry received counsel from his uncle, who highlighted the symbolic and familial implications of such a change.
Royal experts interpret Harry’s interest in a name change as a further attempt to distance himself from the royal family.
Traditionally, all descendants of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are entitled to use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, a combination of the royal family name and Prince Philip’s adopted surname.
“They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step," a friend of Harry told The Daily Mail.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children’s birth certificates list their names as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
Royal biographer Tom Bower has suggested that Meghan Markle sought to emulate Princess Diana. Had the surname change occurred, Meghan’s daughter, who reportedly has met the King only once, would have been named Lilibet Diana Spencer, a more pronounced tribute to Harry’s late mother, as reported by The Daily Mail.
