Three days after US President Donald Trump claimed Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him there would be no invasion of Taiwan as long as Trump remained in office, China has reacted, calling it an “internal matter".

Reacting to Trump’s remarks at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

“The Taiwan issue is purely an internal affair of China, and how to resolve the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people. We will do our utmost to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification. But we will never allow anyone or any force to separate Taiwan from China in any way," she said.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its own territory and has repeatedly vowed to “reunify" with the self-governed, democratic island. However, Taiwan strongly rejects China’s claims of sovereignty.

Responding to former US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks, Taiwan’s foreign ministry on Sunday said it “always closely monitors interactions between senior officials from the United States and China."

The ministry further stated that Taiwan will continue working with countries that have “significant interests" in the Indo-Pacific to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

While the US does not maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it remains the island’s most important international supporter and leading supplier of military equipment.

Meanwhile, China—despite never ruling out the use of force to assert control over Taiwan—continues to describe the Taiwan issue as the most critical and sensitive aspect of its relationship with the US.

Earlier on Friday, in an interview with Fox News, following a meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Trump had said,"I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don’t believe there’s any way it’s going to happen as long as I’m here. We’ll see."

“He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’ President Xi told me that, and I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that,’ but he also said, ‘But I am very patient, and China is very patient,'" Trump had added.
