Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan
Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has once again been moved into solitary confinement at Adiala Jail, with top jail sources confirming to CNN-News18 that he has not been allowed to meet his family or lawyers for the past nine days.
The restrictions, according to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were imposed shortly after Khan’s social media post in which he allegedly referred to Army Chief General Asim Munir as “mentally ill", and after a media interaction by his sister Dr Uzma Khan following her previous meeting with the former prime minister. PTI claims that all meetings have been suspended since then.
On Tuesday night, PTI workers and members of Khan’s family, including his sisters Aleema Khan, Noreen Khan and Uzma Khan, staged a peaceful protest outside Adiala Jail, demanding access to him. PTI leaders were also present, raising slogans against the government and the military leadership.
Late in the night, Punjab Police launched a crackdown to disperse the demonstrators. Officers used water cannons and carried out a lathi-charge against the protesters, despite the cold December weather. Eyewitnesses said Khan’s sisters were left shivering after being hit with water jets.
Police also reportedly stormed the PTI support camp set up outside the prison and allegedly beat several party workers as they cleared the area.
Earlier, Aleema Khan had accused General Munir of being personally responsible for what she described as the “torture" and continued solitary confinement of her brother. She alleged that the army chief was “stubborn" and “making life hell" for Imran Khan.
PTI maintains that neither relatives nor party leaders are being allowed any access to Khan inside the jail, calling the measures unconstitutional and politically motivated. There has been no official comment from the Punjab Police or the federal government on the allegations so far.
CNN-News18 had reported earlier that Pakistan’s political and security establishment is engaged in intense deliberations over launching a treason case against Khan and potentially banning his party. Sources claim that the federal government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in coordination with the military leadership, believes Khan’s conduct has crossed multiple red lines—ranging from alleged breaches of national security to actions said to have destabilised Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships and internal security environment.
