China’s state-run media has mocked US President Donald Trump with AI-generated videos featuring dancing robots and fraught consumers.
They chided Trump for his heavy retaliatory tariffs, which according to them, threaten high inflation and economic distress for Americans.
“‘Liberation Day’, you promised us the stars. But tariffs killed our cheap Chinese cars," an automated female voice sang in a video shared by China’s CGTN – an English-language broadcaster – on its website.
The 2-minute, 42-second video, which talks about Trump calling the day he announced tariffs “Liberation Day," had a warning in the caption: “Track is AI-generated. The debt crisis? 100 percent human-made."
For many Americans, “Liberation Day," hailed by Trump’s administration, means shrinking paychecks and rising costs. Tariffs hit, wallets quit: low-income families take the hardest blow. As the market holds its breath, the toll is already undeniable. #LiberationDay #CGTNOpinion pic.twitter.com/RzXFFVHoFg— CGTN (@CGTNOfficial) April 3, 2025
Another video shared on the X.com page of China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, also made using artificial intelligence, features a robot named TARIFF. In the video, the robot chooses to destroy itself instead of obeying its creator’s orders to impose high tariffs, which lead to “trade wars and unrest."
China has strongly criticized the US tariffs, which have caused the biggest stock market crash since the pandemic. In response, China hit back on Friday with its own import taxes and export restrictions.
According to economists, consumers are likely to witness inflated prices due to the trade war, and the US economy could see a downturn.
The CGTN video shows lyrics in English and Chinese, along with scenes of car factories and human-like robots dancing in destroyed streets. It gives a much more serious and negative view of the situation.
“You taxed each truck, you taxed each tire. Midwest burnin’ in your dumpster fire," the automated voice sang.
