"There is no military solution to the Ukraine war," Jaishankar asserts in recent interview

In a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasised the necessity for diplomatic solutions to global conflicts, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine. He stated, “There is no military solution to the Ukraine war,” advocating for increased diplomatic efforts to engage all parties involved, including both Moscow and Kyiv.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of international cooperation, especially between India and the European Union. He noted, “The EU is India’s largest trade partner and a key investor,” and expressed optimism about deepening ties amidst shifting global trade dynamics. He remarked, “We have been negotiating for some years now... I can see a growing strategic understanding of why we need to bring it to a close,” suggesting that a mutually beneficial agreement could enhance economic collaboration.

Addressing concerns about geopolitical pressures, particularly from China, Jaishankar asserted that nations should prioritise their own interests rather than react solely to external influences. “My life doesn’t revolve around another country. My interests are to see a stable region, a more cooperative and prosperous one,” he explained.

On the topic of India's relationship with Russia amid the Ukraine crisis, Jaishankar defended India's position on purchasing Russian oil, arguing that each region must consider its own economic realities. He stated, “If everything is a matter of such a deep principle... then Europe itself should have cut off all its business with Russia,” underscoring the complexity of international relations.

Jaishankar concluded by urging for renewed dialogue to resolve conflicts, stating, “After more than two and a half years of fighting... it’s common sense that some country or some leader make an effort.” His remarks reflect India's commitment to fostering peace through diplomacy while navigating its diverse international relationships.
