Donald Trump On India-Pakistan: US President Donald Trump asserted that he had “settled" the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, attributing the resolution to his efforts in pursuing trade agreements with both nations. The claim came during a White House meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, where Donald Trump discussed the de-escalation of tensions that followed India’s Operation Sindoor, a response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Donald Trump remarked, “If you take a look at what we just did with Pakistan and India. We settled that whole, and I think I settled it through trade."
He indicated that the US was actively pursuing significant trade deals with both countries, prompting him to inquire of the leaders, “And I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’"
Describing the dangerous escalation that preceded the ceasefire, Donald Trump elaborated, “Somebody had to be the last one to shoot. But the shooting was getting worse and worse, bigger and bigger, deeper and deeper into the countries."
He continued, “And we spoke to them, and I think we, you know, I hate to say we got it settled, and then two days later, something happens, and they say it’s Trump’s fault."
Donald Trump praise the leadership of both South Asian nations, saying, “But… Pakistan has got some excellent people and some really good, great leader. And India is my friend, Modi."
To this, President Ramaphosa concurred, “Modi, mutual friend."
Donald Trump concluded, “He’s a great guy and I called them both. It’s something good."
The US President has consistently maintained that he played a pivotal role in de-escalating the conflict between India and Pakistan.
India has stated that the recent ceasefire with Pakistan was a bilateral agreement, worked out directly between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries. While US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed to have brokered the ceasefire, India has consistently denied any third-party mediation emphasizing that the decision to halt military actions was a result of direct communication between New Delhi and Islamabad and not linked to any trade discussions.
