President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status. This follows the elite US institution’s refusal to implement extensive policy changes mandated by the White House.

In retaliation for the university’s defiance of the administration’s push to exert control over campuses, Trump had already taken steps to freeze $2.2 billion in federal funds on Monday.Trump said Harvard “should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity" if it does not submit to his demands for the college to change the way it runs itself, including selection of students and authority for professors. In the post on his Truth Social Network, the US President said that the tax-exempt status is “totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST."

Harvard’s president, Alan Garber, had previously addressed students and faculty in a letter, pledging to oppose the government’s directives. He maintained that the university would not “negotiate over its independence or its constitutional rights."

Responding to this, Trump’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, in a statement, announced the withholding of $2.2 billion in multi-year grants and a freeze on $60 million in government contracts.
