President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to launch the largest deportation operation in US history, will get down to business a day after his inauguration, launching a large immigration raid in Chicago, the Wall Street Journal reported. The week-long raid will involve up to 200 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

A source, however, said the crackdown would not only be limited to Chicago and the ICE would ramp up raids across the country. The source said US cities like New York and Miami would also see significant arrests of illegal immigrants.

"We are going to be doing operations all across the country... You are going to see arrests in New York. You are going to see arrests in Miami," the source told the Wall Street Journal.

The fiery Republican, who will take the oath of office on January 20 after a thumping win over Kamala Harris in the US polls, vociferously attacked Joe Biden's border policies over illegal immigration on the campaign trail.

The bugle was already sounded by the incoming Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency head, Tom Homan. He also warned the Chicago mayor of prosecution if he impeded the operation.

"(We are) going to start right here in Chicago, Illinois... And if the Chicago mayor doesn't want to help, he can step aside. But if he impedes us, if he knowingly harbours or conceals an illegal alien, I will prosecute him," Homan had said.

Moreover, the first bill Trump is likely to sign as president will be the Laken Riley Act, which will require authorities to detain migrants accused of theft and violent crimes, AP reported. The legislation is named after the student who was killed last year by a Venezuelan man in Georgia.

The President-elect, Reuters reported, is likely to mobilise government agencies to help him deport a record number of immigrants.

Interestingly, the outgoing Biden administration deported the largest number of undocumented immigrants in a decade last year at 271,000. The number also surpassed the record of Trump's first term in office, as per a report by the BBC.
