At least two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed in Oklahoma after severe flooding and storms swept through parts of the South and Midwest US over the Easter weekend. The powerful storm system unleashed flash floods, heavy rain, and damaging winds across Oklahoma and Texas.
The tragic incident occurred when floodwaters trapped several vehicles, including one that was swept away under a bridge in Moore, Oklahoma, about 10 miles south of Oklahoma City.
Although some people were rescued, the bodies of an adult woman and a young boy were later discovered.
Moore police described the event as a "historical weather event" that caused widespread flooding and numerous high-water incidents. The police also requested people to stay at home.
"One of (the vehicles) left the roadway and was swept under the bridge. At the time of the incident, all but two occupants were rescued. It is with great sadness that we report that two individuals, an adult female and a 12-year-old male, were later located deceased," the police said.
Amid flood conditions in the region, the Weather Service issued flood and severe thunderstorm warnings for large parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri, with predictions of continued severe weather, including tornadoes and damaging winds.
Earlier in the month, similar storms had ravaged the region, claiming the lives of more than a dozen people as tornadoes and heavy rain swept across the South and Midwest. Meanwhile, in Marshall County, Oklahoma, a tornado caused significant damage to homes and power lines, though no injuries or fatalities were reported.
