Two Indian students from Telangana’s Hyderabad were killed and five others injured in a car crash in Essex, United Kingdom, early on Monday morning. The accident took place around 4.15 am at the Rayleigh Spur roundabout when a group of nine Indian students, all from Hyderabad, were returning in two cars after Ganesh idol immersion celebrations.
Essex Police confirmed that both drivers, aged 23 and 24, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. Officials said they were part of the same student group and remain in custody.
The deceased were identified as 23-year-old Chaitanya Tarre of Nadargul, who died at the scene, and 21-year-old Rishiteja Rapu of Boduppal, who later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Both had moved to the United Kingdom earlier this year to pursue higher studies.
Chaitanya’s family said he had travelled to the country in February to begin a Master’s programme. “We were told there was an accident, but when we called back his friends, they said he had passed away,” a relative said.
In a statement, Essex Police said: “We received a call about a collision involving two vehicles at the Rayleigh Spur roundabout shortly after 4.15 am. The drivers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving and remain in custody.”
The Indian Students and Alumni Union UK offered condolences, stating it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of the young lives.
