The United States on Tuesday applauded Pakistan’s “continued successes” in containing terrorist groups threatening regional and global security, following counterterrorism talks in Islamabad.
In a joint statement, Washington also expressed condolences for victims of recent attacks in Pakistan, including the Jaffar Express train bombing and the Khuzdar school bus attack.
The dialogue, co-chaired by Pakistan’s Special Secretary for the United Nations Nabeel Munir and US Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory D LoGerfo, addressed threats from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), ISIS-Khorasan and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The discussions came a day after Washington designated the separatist BLA and its armed wing, the Majeed Brigade, as a foreign terrorist organization. The group, also banned in Pakistan, has waged a decades-long insurgency in resource-rich Balochistan province.
Both sides underscored the need to strengthen institutional frameworks, expand counterterrorism capabilities, and curb militants’ use of emerging technologies. They also pledged closer cooperation in multilateral forums, including the United Nations, to promote regional and global stability.
