The US Justice Department on Friday said it had prevented an alleged plan by a North Carolina teenager to carry out a violent, ISIS-inspired attack on New Year’s Eve using knives and hammers.
According to the Justice Department, Christan Sturdivant, 18, from Mint Hill, North Carolina, has been charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation. Officials said the alleged plot was disrupted before any harm could take place.
Sturdivant has not yet entered a plea in the case.
Court documents state that FBI agents searched Sturdivant’s home during the investigation and recovered a handwritten note titled “New Year’s Attack 2026".
The document allegedly outlined plans to stab as many as 20 people and to attack police officers responding to the scene.
An affidavit filed by the FBI said the investigation began last month after authorities received information about social media posts supporting ISIS. Officials later linked the account to Sturdivant, prompting further inquiry.
The affidavit also noted that Sturdivant had previously come to the attention of federal authorities in January 2022, when he was still a minor. At that time, investigators learned that he had been in contact with an Islamic State member based in Europe. According to the filing, he had received instructions to dress entirely in black and carry out attacks using a hammer.
The Justice Department said the case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to identify and prevent extremist violence, particularly threats linked to online radicalisation.
Further court proceedings in the case are awaited.
