US CPI Data LIVE Updates: US consumer prices for a wide range of goods and services rose more than expected in August, while jobless claims accelerated, presenting mixed signals for the Federal Reserve ahead of its policy meeting next week.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by a seasonally adjusted 0.4% in August, double the 0.2% rise recorded in July. This pushed the annual inflation rate to 2.9%, in line with economists’ expectations.
The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices and is viewed by Fed officials as a better measure of long-term inflation trends, rose 0.3% for the month and 3.1% year-on-year—both matching forecasts.
