US President Donald Trump on Saturday said that the United States will play a major role in shaping what happens next in Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Washington would not allow anyone to simply “take over where he left off."
“We’ll be involved in it very much. And we want to do liberty for the people," Trump said in a telephone interview. He added that the US special forces operation that led to Maduro’s capture showed that Washington was “not going to be pushed around."
The US President said the move sends a clear signal to others who challenge the United States.
When asked whether he would support Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who is currently in Norway, to take over leadership, Trump said the situation was still under review. “We’re going to have to look at it right now," he said.
Trump also referred to Venezuela’s current leadership structure, saying the country has a vice president but questioning the legitimacy of past elections. “I don’t know what kind of an election that was, but, you know, the election of Maduro was a disgrace," Trump said, repeating long-standing US claims that Maduro’s rule lacked legitimacy.
