The United States is actively helping Israel intercept a barrage of Iranian missiles, Axios reported on Friday, citing a senior US official, as the Middle East hurtles toward a full-blown regional war following Israel's strike on Iranian soil.
The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, did not provide further information, including whether fighter jets or warships carried out the defensive operation.
Iran has launched hundreds of missiles, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Explosions were heard across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on Friday, as smoke rose from apparent impact zones and civilians scrambled to bomb shelters.
“This is the most significant attack Iran has faced since the war with Iraq,” an Israeli defense official said, following the launch of Operation Rising Lion, a targeted Israeli offensive that struck deep into Iran’s nuclear and military command structure.
Meanwhile, Trump’s meeting with Security Council principals to discuss Israel’s operations has finished, according to the White House. Officials did not provide details on any specific aspects of Trump’s talks with top aides in the White House Situation Room or how long it went.
