An unvaccinated second school-age child hospitalized with measles has become the third person in the US to die from the virus since it began spreading through West Texas in late January.

The child was receiving treatment for measles complications at UMC Health System in Lubbock, Texas. According to the Associated Press, Aaron Davis, a spokesperson for UMC Health System in Lubbock, Texas, declined to specify the exact day on which the child died.

A Trump administration official informed The New York Times that the cause of the child’s death is "still being looked at." The first measles-related death in Texas, linked to the ongoing outbreak, took place in February and involved an unvaccinated school-aged child. Additionally, a measles death in New Mexico is still under investigation.

Measles cases in the US have more than doubled compared to 2024, with Texas seeing a significant rise in cases and hospitalizations.

Other states experiencing active outbreaks, defined as three or more cases, include New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio, and Oklahoma. The virus continues to spread in communities with low vaccination rates.
