According to AFP, the explosions were heard around 2 am local time (0600 GMT). At least seven explosions were heard, along with aircraft flying at low altitude over several neighbourhoods of the Venezuelan capital, Associated Press reported.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has declared a state of emergency, calling on people to mobilise to “defeat this imperialist aggression”.
According to CBS News, US officials have confirmed that President Donald Trump ordered the strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, as the administration early Saturday ratcheted up its campaign against the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
