Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said on Thursday that she presented US President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal during a meeting at the White House.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Machado said she handed the medal to Trump but did not say whether he accepted it. She declined to answer questions on the exchange, according to Reuters.

Machado arrived at the White House earlier in the day for talks with Trump, marking a rare high-level engagement between the two. Wearing a white suit, she was seen arriving at the White House complex in an SUV before being escorted inside, an Agence France-Presse photographer reported.

Officials said the meeting was expected to take the form of a closed-door lunch. No details were immediately available on the agenda or the outcome of the discussions.
