Outgoing US President Joe Biden apparently had an awkward moment as he announced a"good news" during a press briefing about the out-of-control wildfires raging across Southern California that have so far killed five people, forced tens of thousands to leave their homes and left a trail of devastation.

“The good news is, I’m a great-grandfather as of today. I’ll remember this day for a lot of reasons,” Biden said at the briefing inside a fire station in Santa Monica on Wednesday, referring to the birth of his eldest granddaughter, Naomi Biden Neal's first child.

“It’s astounding what has happened. Only one piece of good news: my son lives out here and his wife. They got a notification yesterday that their home was probably burned to the ground. Today, it appears that it’s still standing, they’re not sure," he added.

Naomi gave birth to her first child, a boy, with husband Peter Neal at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The baby’s name is William Brannon Neal IV, according to an Instagram post shared by First Lady Jill Biden.

Before the press briefing, he visited the Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Wednesday morning to see his great-grandchild.

In a USA Today interview published on Wednesday, Biden had said that Naomi Biden Neal, the eldest daughter of Hunter Biden, was having a caesarian section on January 8.

“I’m about to be a great-grandfather, Jesus God,” he said.

With the new addition, Joe Biden, 82, is believed to be the first sitting president to become a great-grandfather while in office.

However, the outgoing President's announcement, which would otherwise be a cause of celebration, was not received well by social media users, with manu questioning the timing amid a crisis.

While one user said, "True to form, Joe Biden is more concerned about his own family than the American people," while another tweeted, "He's the biggest failure in the history of the office .... and the people see it."

"This didn't feel like the time or place to announce it," a X user said, while another commented, "Imagine thinking this is a good time to bring that up."
