A man armed with a knife and a smoke grenade launched an indiscriminate attack in central Taipei on Friday evening, killing at least three people and injuring nine, according to Taiwan’s national news agency and city officials. He first set off a smoke grenade near an underground exit at Taipei Main Station, close to the city’s major rail hub, sending bystanders fleeing in confusion.

After releasing the smoke, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Chang Wen, moved toward a nearby shopping district and continued his assault. He stabbed multiple victims—mainly targeting the neck—on different floors of the Eslite department store before later jumping from the building’s sixth floor. Police said he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
