Trump called his meeting with Zelenskyy in Davos "good", urged an end to the war with Russia, and discussed peace and US support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian airstrikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump in Davos on Thursday.
US President Donald Trump said the meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Davos on Thursday was “good" and called for an end to the war with Russia.
“This war has to end. Everybody wants to have the war end," Trump told reporters in reply to questions about what his message was to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will meet the US leader’s envoy in Moscow later.
“The meeting was good with President Zelensky. We’ll see how it turns out," he added.
Zelenskyy also said he had a “very good" meeting with US President Donald Trump. “We spoke about documents and about air defence," he said.
AFP quoted Zelenskyy saying that Ukraine needs security guarantees from the United States to prevent Russia from invading again, not just from France and the United Kingdom.
“The UK and France are ready to actually commit their forces on the ground… But the backstop of President Trump is needed. And again, no security guarantees work without the US," he said.
According to CNN, Trump declined to detail the substance of the closed-door conversation with Ukraine’s leader.
Earlier in the day, Trump said peace on Ukraine were “getting close". “I think they’re getting close. A lot of people are being killed. We’ve got to get it done," he said.
Previously, Reuters quoted Zelenskyy saying he would only travel to Davos if he could sign agreements with Trump on US security guarantees and post-war reconstruction funding for Ukraine.
Before this, Trump has held talks with Zelenskyy around half a dozen times.
Meanwhile, Russian airstrikes hit several parts of Ukraine on Thursday, in which a 17-year-old man was killed when a drone struck an apartment building in Odesa.
