At a time when foreign countries are signing trade deals with India and showing trust in its government, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has admitted that he and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir travelled abroad to seek financial help.

He made the statement while addressing top Pakistani exporters in Islamabad on Friday night.

Sharif spoke about the difficult choices his government had to make because of Pakistan’s economic condition. He said the country’s foreign exchange reserves had almost doubled, but noted that loans from friendly countries were included in those reserves.

He said, “The current situation is that the reserves of the foreign exchange have almost doubled. But the loans of our friends and countries are included. But you know that the one who goes to take a loan, his head is bowed."

Sharif explained how he and Asim Munir felt embarrassed while seeking help from other countries.

“We feel ashamed when Field Marshal Asim Munir and I go around the world begging for money. Taking loans is a huge burden on our self-respect. Our heads bow down in shame. We cannot say no to many things they want us to do," he said.
